Metal strikes back (EN)

It is claimed that there are more metal bands per inhabitant in Finland, compared to the rest of the world. But what does the metal scene look like in Finland today? Rock music is alive and well and is rising on the charts, but how much space does metal have as a genre right now? What do our panelists think about the future of metal music and is it time for metal music to return to the charts?

The panel will be held in English.

    Mathias “Vreth” Lillmåns har sedan 2006 jobbat på heltid och professionellt som artist inom metalbranschen, med skivor på bolag som Sony, Century Media Records, Spinefarm, Season of Mist m.fl. Mathias är för tillfället sångare och basist i Finntroll, …and Oceans, Festerday och Dispyt. Utöver den egna musiken jobbar Mathias som producent och han är även en av Finlands få sånglärare inom growling-tekniken.

    Toni-Matti Karjalainen

    Dr. Toni-Matti Karjalainen is Professor of Arts Management in Sibelius Academy at the University of the Arts in Helsinki, Finland. He is also Adjunct Professor (Docent) of Music Management and Culture Export at Aalto University in Espoo, Finland, where he also previously worked as Academy Research Fellow and Research Director. Karjalainen holds a Doctor of Arts degree in Art and Design, and Master of Science in Economics. He has been a visiting lecturer and researcher in various countries and produced over one hundred academic and popular publications in different outlets, ranging from design and brand management to popular music. The most recent ones are the books “Pohjoisen laulut – Suomalaisen hevimetallin matka maailmalle (Docendo, 2021) and ”Made in Finland: Studies in Popular Music” (Routledge, 2020) edited with Kimi Kärki. Karjalainen created and organized the Modern Heavy Metal Conference, an international research event, in Finland 2015-2020, acted as Secretary of International Society for Metal Music Studies in 2015-2019 and is actively involved in the music industry and metal scenes.
